Types of Onion Seeds
Selecting the right onion seeds is the first step toward achieving a healthy crop and a high yield. To make the best choice, it’s essential to understand the different types of onion seeds available in the market. Broadly, onion seeds can be categorized into the following types:
F1 Hybrid Onion Seeds
F1 hybrid onion seeds are developed by cross-breeding carefully selected parent plants with desirable traits. These seeds generally produce plants that offer uniform growth and consistent bulb size. They are ideal for commercial farmers and large-scale cultivation, aiming for maximum productivity and quality produce.
Open-Pollinated (OP) Onion Seeds
Open-pollinated onion seeds are naturally pollinated through wind, insects, or other natural means. Onion Seeds in Farming
Onion seeds are small, flat, and usually brown to dark brown in color, with a slightly smooth texture. They are obtained from the mature bulbs of the onion plant. Under suitable conditions, onion seeds generally germinate within 7–14 days.
Using high-quality seeds and following proper sowing, transplanting, and field management practices is essential for a successful onion crop.
Importance of Choosing Quality Onion Seeds
Seeds play a vital role in onion farming, as the success of the entire crop depends on their quality. If the seeds are of poor quality, even the best management practices may not result in a successful crop. For farmers, investing in premium onion seeds is not just an expense but a smart step toward improved productivity, profitability, and better results in onion farming.

Onion Seed Sowing Guide
Before sowing, it is important to check whether the onion seeds have been pre-treated with fungicides or other protective chemicals. Commercially available hybrid and open-pollinated onion seeds are often treated to protect against soil-borne diseases and pests. If the seeds are not pre-treated, it is recommended to treat them with suitable chemicals following expert guidance.
Time of Sowing Onion Seeds
The ideal sowing period for onion seeds varies according to the region and season. In North India, onion seeds are generally sown during November. In Tamil Nadu, onion seeds are usually planted between June and October. Farmers in Maharashtra typically sow onion seeds from October to January. In regions around Bengaluru, onions are usually sown from June to October.
Method of Sowing Onion Seeds
Onions can be cultivated either by using seeds or planting bulbs. Seeds may be sown directly in the field or first raised in a nursery, after which the seedlings are transplanted into the main field. Transplanting is usually preferred for irrigated onion crops. Typically, 8–10 kg of onion seeds are required per hectare, and seedlings are transplanted when they are around 6–8 weeks old and approximately 15 cm tall. Direct field sowing of onion seeds, whether by broadcasting or drilling, generally requires nearly twice the quantity of seed compared to the transplanting method.
